50 vintage cars have been left to rot and decay in a German forest. A collection of supercars have purposely been crashed into trees, buried in mud and placed on cliff faces by former racing driver Michael Fröhlich. Michael was sat down by his father at a young age and told to make something of his life by the time he turned 50. After winning a grand prix race in Germany in 1984, in his very own Jaguar XK120, Michael decided to collect one vintage car for each year of his life until the year 2000. His collection includes a Rolls Royce with a Queen Elizabeth doll at the wheel, a Porsche 356 racer and a Buick.

『オリオン星雲』 [科学]


Astronomers and visualisation specialists have combined visible observations from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope with the infrared vision of NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope to create an unprecedented, three-dimensional, fly-through of the picturesque Orion Nebula, a nearby star-forming region. The three-dimensional video takes the viewer on a breathtaking flight. It follows contours of colourful dust and gas — past newborn stars, glowing clouds heated by intense radiation, and tadpole-shaped gaseous envelopes surrounding protoplanetary disks. Hubble sees objects that glow in visible light, which are typically hotter than the objects that Spitzer is sensitive to. Spitzer’s infrared vision pierces through obscuring dust to see stars embedded deep in the nebula, as well as fainter and less massive stars, which are brighter in infrared light than in visible. The new visualisation demonstrates how two telescopes can work together to provide a more complex and complete picture of an astronomical object.

This visualisation is an excerpt from a longer sequence that explores the Orion Nebula using both visible and infrared light. Two correlated computer models were created based on visible light observations from the Hubble Space Telescope and infrared light observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope. As the camera flies into the star-forming region, the sequence cross-fades back and forth between the visible and infrared views. The glowing gaseous landscape has been illuminated and carved by the high energy radiation and strong stellar winds from the massive hot stars in the central cluster. The infrared observations generally show cooler temperature gas at a deeper layer of the nebula that extends well beyond the visible image. In addition, the infrared showcases many faint stars that shine primarily at longer wavelengths. The higher resolution visible observations show finer details including the wispy bow shocks and tadpole-shaped proplyds. In this manner, the movie illustrates the contrasting features uncovered by multi-wavelength astronomy.

This visualisation takes the viewer on a breathtaking flight through the Orion Nebula, a nearby star-forming region. The video has been produced using scientific imagery and data from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. As the camera flies into the nebula, the viewer sweeps past newborn stars, smouldering clouds heated by intense radiation, and tadpole-shaped gaseous envelopes surrounding protoplanetary disks. A glowing gaseous landscape is revealed, that has been illuminated and carved by the high-energy radiation and strong stellar winds from the massive hot stars in the central cluster.

This visualisation explores the Orion Nebula as seen in infrared-light observations from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope. This video is designed to be compared and contrasted against the companion movie using visible light observations from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. As the camera flies into the star-forming region, it reveals a glowing gaseous landscape that has been illuminated and carved by the high-energy radiation and strong stellar winds from the massive hot stars in the central cluster. The infrared observations generally show cool temperature gas at a deep layer that shows the full bowl shape of the nebula. In addition, the infrared showcases many faint stars that shine primarily at longer wavelengths.

Earth's surface temperatures in 2017 were the second warmest since since 1880, when global estimates first become feasible, NASA scientists found. Global temperatures 2017 were second only to 2016, which still holds the record for the hottest year; however, 2017 was the warmest year on record that did not start with an El Nino weather pattern, as the previous two years did. In a separate, independent analysis, NOAA scientists found that 2017 was the third-warmest year in their record. The minor difference is due to different methods to analyze global temperatures used by the two agencies, although over the long-term the records remain in strong agreement. 『スペクトルエネルギー分布のシミュレーション』 [科学]


When exoplanet scientists first spotted patterns in disks of dust and gas around young stars, they thought newly formed planets might be the cause. But a recent NASA study cautions that there may be another explanation: one that doesn't involve planets at all. An alternative explanation suggests the dust and gas in the disk can form the patterns themselves when they interact with starlight. When high-energy UV starlight hits dust grains, it strips away electrons. Those electrons collide with and heat nearby gas. As the gas warms, its pressure increases and it traps more dust, which in turn heats more gas. The resulting cycle, called the photoelectric instability (PeI), can work in tandem with other forces to create some of the features astronomers have previously associated with planets in debris disks. A 2013 study suggested PeI could explain the narrow rings seen in some disks. The model also predicted that some disks would have arcs, or incomplete rings, which weren't directly observed in a disk until 2016. The new simulation includes an additional new factor: radiation pressure, a force caused by starlight striking dust grains. Light exerts a minute physical force on everything it encounters. This radiation pressure propels solar sails and helps direct comet tails so they always point away from the Sun. The same force can push dust into highly eccentric orbits, and even blow some of the smaller grains out of the disk entirely. The new research modeled how radiation pressure and PeI work together to affect the movement of dust and gas, and also found that the two forces manifest different patterns depending on the physical properties of the dust and gas.
